10 May 2024 | 12:20702 Afternoons host Relebogile Mabotja chats to businesswoman and investor Meisie Nkosi about investing in the concept of retirement estates.
South African retirement statistics are looking dire, with 90% of South Africans predicted to not be able to retire comfortably due to a lack of savings and investment. But this bodes some more questions: How do we adequately prepare for our retirement? AND how can we look after our elderly who are already retired?
A solution could be investing in a retirement estate. Although the idea of having our parents not live with us in their older years has been frowned upon by previous generations, the concept has steadily been considered more in recent times.
We learned more about this potential solution on Afternoons with Relebogile Mabotja when we were joined by Meisie Nkosi, award-winning entrepreneur and managing director of Bella Bonni Guest House. Nkosi unpacked the benefits and misconceptions about retirement estates and gave insight into one of Johannesburg’s best-kept secrets: Celebration Retirement Estate.

“We have changed in so many ways – transportation, social media – why can’t we do that for our parents? Why can't we give our parents the best?”
“Our parents need friends, they need to socialize, they need community.”
This conversation was the second episode in a series of interviews aimed to dive deeper into the idea of investing in retirement estates. In case you missed the first one with Louise Martin, CEO of Estate Living, listen below.
