The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA) has publicly distanced itself from a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a taxi owner from its rival association, the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA).
The taxi boss was shot and killed on the R300 highway earlier on Monday while travelling with his security detail. Both of his bodyguards were injured in the attack and have been rushed to hospital.

CODETA spokesperson Makhosandile Tumana expressed shock and sadness over the incident.
"We as CODETA region condemn what happened earlier today," Tumana stated. "The killing of the member from CATA region is unacceptable and we don't want to see these kinds of incidents in our industry."
Tumana was also quick to clarify that the incident is not linked to any ongoing dispute over routes in the Somerset West region.
"And we also want to appeal to our media houses not to associate this form of practice with what happened in Strand/Somerset and Khayelitsha/Somerset routes," he added.
"The reopening of those routes is still operating with peace and harmony, and we want to maintain that standard."
