JOHANNESBURG - A 21-year-old man has died after spending more than a month in a coma following an alleged brutal attack by police officers.
It's understood he was part of six men who were allegedly assaulted by police officers on 17 May after their minibus was mistakenly targeted.
They worked for a logistics company in Midrand and were on their way home when the attack occurred.
The Independent Investigative Police Directorate (IPID) is investigating a case of murder, attempted murder, assault, and torture after police officers brutally pounced on a vehicle carrying six men.
The men were on their way home from a shift at their logistics company when two shots were allegedly fired at the minibus taxi.
According to News24, the driver and the passenger sitting behind the driver were hit in the body and head, while the four other men in the vehicle ducked for cover.
When they got out of the car to call out to police and identify themselves, they were assaulted by the cops.
One of the men, 21-year-old Lidalethu Mashazi, was rushed to hospital and spent more than a month in a coma and on life support before he died on Wednesday.
It's unclear at this stage what led the police officers to shoot at the vehicle.
