Global ticket marketplace Ticketmaster is buying South Africa's Quicket.

The US-based business says it's making the acquisition to 'further support the rapidly growing live events market across the continent'.

Noting that Quicket is known for its self-service platform and event organiser tools, Ticketmaster says the 'partnership' will further its success in Africa by offering solutions for events of all sizes.

Ticketmaster launched into the continent in 2022.

The Money Show gets comment from Arthur Goldstuck, founder and CEO of tech market research organisation World Wide Worx.

While this is a case of a giant swallowing up a feisty local player, it is also testament to the quality of South African innovation in this space, Goldstuck remarks.

He lauds Quicket as an example of how to use the cloud effectively, especially to allow people to customise their options.

"Ticketmaster is pretty much a one-size-fits-all offering, and you get the sense of being part of this giant anonymous machine, whereas with Quicket you really get a personal feel - you can customise your events, as an individual can host an event."
"It's a very nimble and very friendly model, and in that sense it's completely counter to the culture off Ticketmaster."
Arthur Goldstuck, Founder - World Wide Worx

Goldstuck points out that Quicket uses cloud computing for both its services and for security.

He feels the local company will be allowed to operate independently to continue its current model because it is so successful.

Ticketmaster has said that Quicket will continue to operate as a standalone business unit from Cape Town, under the leadership of MD James Tagg.

"Africa is home to some of the most passionate fans in the world... Partnering with Quicket will supercharge our mission to elevate Africa’s dynamic live events to the global spotlight they truly deserve."
Mark Yovich, President - Ticketmaster
