AI voice cloning can create harmful messages with 80% accuracy

AI voice cloning is becoming a real threat, as it can accurately mimic a human voice.
This can include the voice of a loved one, right down to their laugh or inflexions.

Cybercriminals then use this technology to manipulate their targets through fake phone calls pretending to be someone they know.
It can also be used to bypass security systems.
This technology was used in a 2024 heist in which $25 million was stolen by thieves using AI to impersonate a company’s CFO in a video call.
According to Ebrahim, Microsoft’s AI can mimic a voice after just three seconds of audio.

She says that hundreds of tests have been conducted on AI tools and 80% of the time they produced convincing cloned voices.
Using these tools, they generated realistic voice clones of political figures urging people not to vote or alleging fraud.
