Today (23 August) marks the third anniversary of the tragic killing of Babita Deokaran, a senior Gauteng Health Department official who was actively working to expose significant corruption at a Gauteng hospital.
On 23 August 2021, Deokaran was brutally gunned down in her driveway after dropping her daughter off at school.
Though six men were sentenced to prison terms ranging from six to 22 years for her murder, a year ago, the masterminds behind this heinous act remain unidentified.
Mothibi reveals that an investigation has disclosed that Tembisa Hospital's financial discrepancies exceed R2 billion.
He says that Deokaran's evidence has been crucial in uncovering instances where officials were abusing the quotation system and circumventing procurement procedures.
He adds that they have identified three distinct syndicates and service providers, which they will target immediately to ensure that the money is recovered.
"Thanks to Babita Deokaran, who identified already in 2021 that there were more than 200 purchase orders that were suspicious, that led us to this investigation. May her soul rest in peace."
- Andy Mothibi, Head – Special Investigating Unit
Mothibi emphasises that Tembisa Hospital employees involved will face consequences, including disciplinary action for misconduct and criminal prosecution, to ensure accountability.
Regarding the criminal investigation into Deokaran’s shooting, he says it is at an advanced stage.
John Clarke says that the SIU should acknowledge the media for its role in holding authorities accountable and ensuring they remain under scrutiny.
