MK Party fails in court bid to interdict JSC sitting

JOHANNESBURG - The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has failed in its bid to interdict Monday’s sitting of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The Johannesburg High Court has dismissed the party’s urgent application to postpone the upcoming JSC sitting, which will see over 50 candidate judges being interviewed for a number of vacancies in the country’s courts.

The MK Party asked the court to postpone the JSC sitting while it seeks clarity on whether its parliamentary leader, John Hlophe, could participate. 

Last week, the Western Cape High Court issued an interim order preventing Hlophe from participating in the JSC.

The application was brought by the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Under Law (FUL), who argued that Hlophe could not serve on the same body that recommended his impeachment as Western Cape judge president earlier this year.
