JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng government said it is on track to settling its multi-billion rand debt to the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL).
The province owes SANRAL nearly R20 billion in historic debt, primarily due to the scrapping of the controversial e-toll system.
National Treasury has covered 70% of the debt, while the Gauteng government has committed to repaying the remaining portion.
Speaking at a media briefing in Midrand on Wednesday, Premier Panyaza Lesufi expressed his satisfaction with his administration honouring its part of the agreement.
"We are proud in the last 100 days we kept our commitment of paying R3.8 billion on the e-toll debt to the National Treasury. We are hopeful the minister will acknowledge that we are indeed doing well, and we are ready to meet this obligation so that we finally exclude the elements of e-tolls in our road system."
