The African National Congress (ANC)'s Eastern Cape provincial conference has been called off after days of legal wrangles and internal disputes.

This comes after the applicants who disputed the ANC's processes before the conference and the ANC's legal team agreed to cancel the elective conference.

The parties reached the agreement to end the conference during the contempt of court urgent application on Saturday morning.

The ANC's decision to call off the conference after three days of delays and court challenges was taken during this morning contempt of court application.

The contempt of court application came after the ANC was alleged to have continued with the conference and registration despite an earlier interdict halting it from proceeding until it resolves its disputes over branches.

The cancellation of the conference means the contempt of court matter is now off the court roll.

Judge Johannes Louw read out the order in court.

“The respondent has conveyed the decision to not proceed with the Eastern Cape provincial congress, scheduled to take place between the 26th and 29th of March 2026.”

The decision will be communicated to delegates this afternoon following Saturday morning’s PEC meeting.
