Clear skies are predicted for the Virgin Active Ride Joburg Cycle Challenge this weekend.
Athletes will come together to take on the country's second-biggest timed race on Sunday (17 November).
“The vibe at the finish line is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced because every athlete that crosses that finish line feels special.”
– Liezel van der Westhuizen
Marlow shares tips to ensure it is a safe and enjoyable race:
- Ensure that your bike is serviced
- Make sure your helmet is in good condition and you are wearing padded shorts and a light-weight jacket
- While it is tempting to push, pace yourself as it is a 97km race
- Hydrate consistently, even before you get thirsty
- Keep light snacks handy to refuel
- Keep sunglasses on you, not only to protect you from the sun’s glare but also from debris
- Be aware of those around you and make sure you are holding a straight line. Signal when you want to change position
“Remember that this race has over 20,000 participants, so safety is crucial… As much as it is about enjoying the experience, it is also about reaching the finish line. Ride smart, stay safe, and have a great race!”
– Lloyd Marlowe
