CAPE TOWN - A 12-year-old girl has drowned at Monwabisi Beach in Khayelitsha.
It's understood she was caught in rip currents on Saturday.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said in the same incident, a 34-year-old man disappeared in the surf zone after attempting to rescue the 12-year-old.
After he brought the body of the girl onto the beach, it's believed he then got into difficulties before disappearing in the water.
The girl was declared deceased on arrival at hospital.
The man and the girl that he had tried to rescue are not related.
