Over 51,000 spaza shops registered in SA so far
In line with President Cyril Ramaphosa's directive, spaza shop owners should register their businesses by the 13th of December.
The families of five children who died on Sunday after allegedly consuming chips from a local spaza shop in Naledi, Soweto, are looking for closure.
JOHANNESBURG - More than 51,000 spaza shops have been registered nationwide, with the majority located in Kwazulu-Natal.
In line with President Cyril Ramaphosa's directive, spaza shop owners should register their businesses by the 13th of December.
This move comes in response to the widespread rise of food-borne illnesses across the country, believed to be linked to the sale of contaminated food.
African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said that the party is satisfied with the progress of the registration process.
"Eight hundred spaza shops have been closed to date, with 93% of these being foreign-owned. We call on the government to employ additional inspectors to monitor the sector so that it serves its intended purpose."
