CAPE TOWN - The Department of Home Affairs offices will extend operating hours by two hours for the next 10 days.
Between Tuesday, 10 December and 20 December, all offices will only close at 6pm instead of 4pm.
Where possible, Home Affairs has also introduced dedicated counters in its big offices for the collection of smart IDs and passports.
The department said it will allow walk-ins for those who have not been able to book for application and collection appointments through its online booking system.
Minister Leon Schreiber is appealing to those who have been waiting for three weeks or more after applying for identity documents.
He said the extended office hours have been introduced to facilitate ease of travelling over the holiday period and to reduce waiting time in queues over the festive season.
