JOHANNESBURG - The South African Communist Party (SACP) wants a referendum on land expropriation without compensation.
The SACP says successive governments led by its alliance partner, the African National Congress (ANC) have failed to address the country’s historical land dispossession.
The party is currently holding its 5th special national congress at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.

The theme of the songs at the SACP congress has been about the party freeing itself from the shackles of the ANC and going into government by itself.
The party has already resolved to contest the 2026 local government elections.
While giving the political report SACP’s Secretary-General, Solly Mapaila says South Africa’s land question has still not been resolved.
“In order to resolve this question we call for radical measures to relook the land question. With the first being the opening of the dates preventing the return of colonially disposed of land to their rightful owners and for effective redistribution of land to the hungry masses and engaging the erstwhile colonisers to pay reparations. We should be ready for a long haul and even to mobilise for a referendum in this regard because some of the people want to believe that because we have the constitutional court in this country the people no longer have a say.”
Mapaila says the ANC can no longer be trusted to lead the fight for land redistribution since it got in bed with the Democratic Alliance.
Day 2 of the South African Communist Party’s 5th Special National Conference has begun at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.
