CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town (CoCT) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) launched a joint Festive Season Safety Plan on Friday by bolstering law enforcement with an extra 870 officers.
The joint operation is the first major public safety initiative since the signing of a cooperation agreement between the SAPS, the CoCT and the Western Cape government in August.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis joined SAPS management and other stakeholders to launch the operation at the grand parade, with a troop of new city law enforcement cadets marching down Darling Street to the sound of the SAPS marching band.

Hill-Lewis said the deployment was the city's biggest deployment ever.
"All of these officers will be deployed across the city at our most popular beaches, mountain and hiking routes, tourist hotspots, CBDs, roadblocks, community swimming pools, and crime hotspots."
The cadets will join more than 4,000 more experienced officers who will be assisting SAPS this festive season.
