JOHANNESBURG - The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has suspended three of its members in KwaZulu-Natal due to what it has described as ill-discipline.
Provincial chief whip Dr Kwazi Mbanjwa and KwaZulu-Natal Legislature members Sfiso Zuma and Thobani Zuma have been suspended with immediate effect.
The three will face a disciplinary hearing, which will determine their future within the MK Party.
While the MK Party has not disclosed the specific reasons for suspending its three members from the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, it has accused them of violating the organisation's constitution through irregularities and transgressions.
However, a leaked letter written by secretary-general Floyd Shivambu reveals Mbanjwa had been refusing to hand over the party’s bank accounts to the treasurer general.
In the letter, Shivambu states that Mbanjwa failed to comply with directives from the party’s highest decision-making body, the national high command, thus breaching its constitution.
Mbanjwa was an ally of MK Party leader Jacob Zuma and even served as the director-general in the Presidency during Zuma’s tenure as South Africa’s president.
There is limited information regarding the reasons behind the suspensions of Thobani and Sfiso.
Pending the outcomes of their disciplinary hearing, they will all step down from their party and provincial legislature positions.
