CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has welcomed a Stellenbosch University report giving its #BackOnTrack learning recovery programme a thumbs up.
The programme was introduced at public schools across the province to reverse COVID-19 learning losses.
It's designed to improve learning outcomes across grades and consists of extra weekend and holiday classes, as well as additional training for teachers.
The report, released by the university’s Research on Socio-Economic Policy group, evaluated the programme's impact and found that it works in reversing learning losses.
Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier: "The report states that the #BackOnTrack programme demonstrated significant success in mitigating learning losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with some interventions resulting in nearly a full year of learning recovery through attendance of only nine weekend sessions."
