WC Education MEC Maynier calls for more pupils to choose pure maths as a school subject

CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Education MEC, David Maynier is calling for more pupils to choose pure maths as a subject.
He was speaking at the National Senior Certificate awards ceremony on Thursday.
The annual event is hosted at the premier’s residence to acknowledge the province’s top-achieving matriculants.
Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier said he hopes to see more candidates writing maths, passing maths and passing it well.
He singled out a few township schools that have shown great improvement in their maths marks.
Schools like Joe Slovo Secondary School recorded a 96% maths pass rate, with six matric candidates earning distinctions in the 2024 matric exam.
The Centre for Science and Technology in Khayelitsha achieved a 98.3% maths pass rate, with 19 candidates earning distinctions.
Maynier said that the class of 2025 would have their work cut out for them
"Well, the class of 2025 has some big shoes to fill but I'm confident that we can continue to improve our pass rate and that the matric class of 2025 will beat the very high benchmark of 86.6%.”
The MEC said he’s determined to improve on the province’s current matric pass rate.
