No discipline for EMPD officers in R120k extortion case

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s (IPID) Assistant Director for Investigations, Thulani Magagula, says six officers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) are currently on trial for allegedly extorting R120,000 from a foreign national.

The officers, aged between 31 and 39, are attached to the EMPD Drug Unit.

It is alleged that the officers extorted the money from a Congolese businessman who was doing business in the country at the time.

Magagula was testifying before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Saturday.

He told the commission that although IPID made recommendations to the EMPD in 2024, no internal disciplinary action has been taken against the officers.

"They are not proceeding because they do not have video footage; they are looking for video footage. So, they brought a memory stick to me, and I told them that I'm waiting for my IT person, our lady who's assisting us in Gauteng. She's based at the Pretoria national office so sometimes she comes to Johannesburg. So, I told Mrs Motsepe that as soon as she comes to Johannesburg, I will ask her to download that video footage for you," Magagula stated.
