It's unclear what happened on Thursday night, but the entity suspects that vandalism is to blame.

JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg City Power said electricity would be restored in the CBD once assessments are completed following an underground fire that affected supply.

It's unclear what happened on Thursday night, but the entity suspects that vandalism is to blame.  

The utility provider has assured residents that the fire has been successfully extinguished.  

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said technicians could only gain access to the tunnels once the smoke cleared.  

"The following areas have been affected: Bellevue, Bez-Valley, Bruma, Cyrildene, Kensington, Houghton Estate, Observatory and surrounding areas. These areas will remain off until the assessment is completed along with the necessary repairs."
