JOHANNESBURG - After eight years of struggling without a local healthcare facility Sicelo Community in Midvaal Sedibeng welcomes a new primary healthcare clinic.
Gauteng Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko officially opened the clinic last month.
It replaces the old facility that was torched by residents in 2017 during a protest, resulting in patients having to travel long distances to get to the nearest clinic.
"This is a much-needed facility for this community. Sicelo is a developing community. For me, this is very important because it means this facility, this crucial and important facility, is right at the doorstep of our people," said the Midvaal Local Municipality's Mayor - Peter Teixeira.
Nkomo-Ralehoko says the community must learn from past mistakes and protect the new facility.
"It's no secret that this community has faced hardships. Patients were forced to travel long distances and to cross the R59 main road to Midvaal daycare centre that is full on a daily basis. It can't cope with the pressure."
