JOHANNESBURG - The United Nations Secretary-General has called on the international community to halt the supply of weapons to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Antonio Guterres addressed dignitaries and heads of state at Saturday's opening of the 38th African Union ordinary session.
The two-day summit continued on Sunday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
During his address, Guterres also emphasised the need for the UN Security Council to promote peace and reduce human suffering in Africa.
“As we near the holy months of Ramadan, it is time for an immediate cessation of hostilities. And the international community must come together to stop the flow of weapons and the bankrolling of bloodshed. In the democratic republic of Congo, the Congolese people have been suffering yet again from a brutal cycle of violence.”
