On Friday, 21 February, Wilderness Search and Rescue were called to rescue a lone hiker who had fallen and injured himself on Devil’s Peak.

Passing hikers heard his cries for help and alerted the authorities.

It is believed the hiker had fallen into a ravine and injured his leg two days before he was heard by the passersby.

“He is exceptionally lucky that a group of passing hikers heard him and were able to raise the alarm.”
- David Nel, Spokesperson for Wilderness Search and Rescue

Wilderness Search and Rescue offers these tips to stay safe when hiking:

-          Do not go hiking or trail running on your own

-          Carry a fully charged cell phone and a power bank

-          Tell someone where you are going and when they can expect you to return

-          Ensure someone has the emergency number, 021 937 0300.
