In a call to John Maytham on Thursday, Langebaan resident Ellie shared her harrowing experience with banking fraud, revealing how she became a victim of a sophisticated scam to the tune of R10,000.

She says she received a call from someone claiming to be from First National Bank (FNB) with whom she and her partner hold accounts.

She says the fraudulent transfer happened after she answered the call from a number starting with '010516'.

"They had every single detail. I did not have to give them anything. They had my bank account number, my partner's account number, and his credit card. They could give us details of transactions we had made."

Ellie says she is still not sure how the scammers managed to transfer the money from her account.

"It had to be an inside job. We didn't give them any details; they had all of it; they had our ID numbers."
