CAPE TOWN - The chairperson of Parliament's appropriations committee said that the real work to get the budget over the line has started now.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana had another stab at tabling the 2025 budget on Wednesday.
But initial indications are that it has failed to garner enough support for it to be adopted.
As chairperson of the Appropriations Committee, Mmusi Maimane said it was now up to his committee to interrogate government's spending plans.
"Our main job as a committee now is to say where are the cuts that we can make to ensure that we don't have leakage or wasteful expenditure. So, that is the mandate now and I'll certainly be going into public consultation to hear from the people of South Africa. Along with that we'll be able to make recommendations to Parliament just how to process the budget. We'll certainly be engaging across the various portfolios to make sure the money is spent properly."
