JOHANNESBURG - As the world observes Glaucoma Awareness Day on Wednesday, the Gauteng Health Department is urging locals to take their eye health seriously.
According to academic studies, there are about six million people affected with the eye condition, with half a million people already blind in Africa.
Glaucoma is caused by damage to the optic nerve, which is often linked to eye pressure that can lead to loss of vision.
The Health Department notes that the condition is preventable, and people should perform their eye test screenings at the public facilities across the province.
Department’s spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said, "The public should take advantage of the free screening services that are available at the public health facilities to safeguard their sight."
