JOHANNESBURG - Controversial Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso is facing deportation after being arrested for violating South Africa's immigration laws.
The Department of Home Affairs said Omotoso was declared a prohibited person after the minister rejected his appeal to remain in the country, making his stay unlawful.

He was taken into custody on Saturday morning and is expected to appear in court on Monday.
Omotoso was acquitted in April on 32 charges, including rape, human trafficking, and sexual assault, alleged to have taken place in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, where he led a church.
Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza said Omotoso's arrest is a direct result of his non-compliance with the Immigration Act.
“Omotoso earlier challenged his status as a prohibited person in court, and the court held that his status should be remitted back to the department for reconsideration. After carefully reconsidering the matter, the minister upheld the decision to declare Omotoso as a prohibited person. The Department of Home Affairs continues to be guided by our unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law without fear or favour.”
