JOHANNESBURG - Joburg City Power has rolled out a free basic electricity programme, which aims to provide eligible customers with free electricity units each month.
The utility says this is part of its strategy to ensure inclusive access to electricity and improve customer compliance.
It's also meant to address electricity theft and equipment damage caused by illegal connections.
A registration drive will run from 17 June 2025 to 31 July 2025, with a target of registering 130,000 indigent customers.
The utility says once registered, eligible customers will receive 50 kWh of electricity per month at no cost.
Spokesperson Isaac Mangena says pensioners, child-headed homes and people earning below average salary may apply.
"Every time when we have an outage, the customers will plead poverty, saying that they can not afford electricity. Which is really the truth because the price of electricity it keeps on increasing every year. As such, we are as a proper government of the municipality of the City of Johannesburg, are saying that those people that feel that they qualify should come through and register for this basic electricity."
