JOHANNESBURG - Former Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has shrugged off, for now, claims he could also make another play at the keys to the city as parties mull their mayoral candidates for 2026’s local government elections.
The leader of ActionSA also has weighed in on the run for Johannesburg’s mayoral candidacy after the Democratic Alliance (DA)’s federal council chairperson, Helen Zille, confirmed she had been approached to run for office.
The DA is among the first to start internal process to select mayoral candidates for the four metros.
While Mashaba said ActionSA is yet to formally select its mayoral candidates for key municipalities, he said he would rather back other leaders in the party.
But he wouldn’t be drawn into speculation about who the top runner for Johannesburg would be.
“I’m excited about the future of my country and confident that one day, we’ll have a country where us as black people can be proud for having managed to demonstrate to the whom that this whole notion that black people are not capable to do things. It is highly possible; we just need ethical leaders that are prepared to work.”
