DA committed to 'driving economic reform' with one year of the GNU: Steenhuisen

CAPE TOWN – Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen says it's been a tough year of ups and downs since the Government of National Unity (GNU) was formed in June last year.
The DA celebrated its 25th anniversary on Tuesday by handing out blankets to pensioners in Hanover Park.
Steenhuisen joined Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and other party officials to share birthday cake with the residents of Hanover Cottages home for the elderly.
He used to occasion to reflect on the party's first year being part of the GNU.

"We've been battle tested in the vat debate. We now have a budget that's going to be passed this week. We've got a medium-term development plan that's been [assed. We have a fiscal framework that's been passed," said Steenhuisen.
He says while the GNU has made progress, there's a great deal of work to be done to grow the economy.
"We've got to do far more, far quicker to make sure that we're stimulating the economy, that we're driving the economic reforms that are going to be required to get South Africa off this high debt, low growth, high unemployment trajectory."
Steenhuisen says the GNU has four years left before the next elections to show South Africans it has reduced poverty, created jobs and grown the economy.
