The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 Warning ahead of a cold front expected to make landfall on Wednesday, 25 June 2025, bringing a dramatic change in weather conditions across the south-western regions of the country.
According to the SAWS, the Western Cape's south coast will experience scattered to widespread rain and showers, along with damaging winds from 25 to 26 June. The system is expected to bring heavy rainfall, especially over the western parts of the province, raising the risk of localised flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
“The cold front is expected to be accompanied by heavy rainfall with a risk of localised flooding over the western parts of the Western Cape, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas on Wednesday into Thursday.”
- Rudzani Malala, Head of Disaster Risk Reduction - SAWS
Motorists are advised to take extra precautions as wet and slippery road conditions may create hazardous driving environments.
Marine conditions are also expected to deteriorate significantly, with forecasts of gale-force winds and very rough seas along the coastlines of the Northern Cape and Western Cape. Wave heights are predicted to reach between 5.5 and 7.5 metres, which may result in:
-
Disruption to fishing and port activities
-
Increased risk of vessels capsizing
-
Dangerous conditions for small boats
-
Hazardous shoreline conditions
Coastal residents and beachgoers are strongly urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary exposure to these potentially dangerous conditions.
