JOHANNESBURG - It's the end of the road for Johannesburg Speaker of Council Nobuhle Mthembu, who has been removed from the position through a motion of no confidence.
The bid for the ActionSA member’s booting was sponsored by the Al-jama-ah Party, which accused her of incompetence.
Mthembu was elected to the speaker position in August last year, through the backing of the African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Shortly after last year’s general elections, ActionSA’s national leadership made a surprising move, choosing to side with the ANC in municipal councils.

However, earlier on Wednesday, Herman Mashaba’s party chose not to support the failed motion of no confidence against Mayor Dada Morero.
In response, the ANC did not back Mthembu during her own no-confidence vote.
Council chairperson Adold Marema announced the outcome.
"Those that are supporting that the Speaker must go are 212 and those who are against the motion are 48."
Mthembu’s successor is expected to be elected at Thursday's council sitting.
