CAPE TOWN - Twenty-one suspects are set to appear in court on Monday related to a flare up of gang violence, which left five people dead, and seven others injured in Mitchells Plain.

A multi-disciplinary police team arrested the suspects in Beacon Valley, Tafelsig and Portlands, where 43 suspected "gang houses" were searched last week.

Fourteen suspects were arrested for murder and attempted murder, while seven others were nabbed after being caught with illegal guns and ammunition.

Western Cape police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk said a licensed 9mm pistol and ammunition were confiscated from one residence in Mitchells Plain.

Van Wyk said five more firearms and an assortment of ammunition were confiscated at another residence and seven suspects aged between 17 and 46 were arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

“Fourteen suspects aged between 20 and 39 were arrested for murder and attempted murder, and a 30-year-old suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of ammunition."

Van Wyk said more suspects are being sought related to the shootings last week, while those arrested are expected to make their first appearance in Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court on Monday.
