CAPE TOWN - A bail hearing for an alleged baby snatcher is underway in the Bellville Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The accused, Sameemah Jacobs, faces charges of kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice.

Jacobs was arrested at her home in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, after being found with a nine-day-old baby abducted from Middestad Mall in Bellville two weeks ago.

Anti-kidnapping unit detective, Sergeant David Fortuin, is testifying in a hearing Thursday for the court to decide whether Jacobs would be released on bail.

Fortuin is giving details about the investigation which led to Jacobs' arrest on Monday, 30 June.

The detective told the court how Jacobs befriended the baby's mother, Imaan Sharmar, during her pregnancy.

Fortuin also mentioned another woman named Chevon, who told Sharmar she was involved with a non-governmental organisation (NGO) which would provide Sharmar with support during her pregnancy.

The sergeant told the court that Chevon was involved in abducting the baby from Middestad Mall on Saturday, 28 June, while Jacobs was later arrested, after she was found with the infant two days later.

The bail hearing continues.
