JOHANNESBURG - The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party in Gauteng says it will be keeping close tabs on the criminal case of controversial businessman, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
Matlala made a brief appearance before the Alexandra Magistrates Court earlier on Friday.
He is accused of paying for a failed hit on his ex-girlfriend, socialite, Tebogo Thobejane, in 2023.
The tenderpreneur faces charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, money laundering and fraud.
During court proceedings, Matlala’s lawyers expressed their disquiet over the extraction of information from his phone in the absence of his attorney.
The pulling of information from the tenderpreneur’s device was done after he signed a consent form, also without legal representation.
His counsel also bemoaned the state’s failure to relinquish the docket in its entirety, accusing the state of attempting to ambush them in the looming trial.

The MK Party, which seeks to see Matlala behind bars for the charges, has warned the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) not to botch the high-profile case.
“The defence was starting to poke holes in the evidence that the state wanted to present to court. They’ve asked about Section 205 which obviously seeks to suggest that the evidence that is contained may not be admissible if that is not there. Those are elementary mistakes that the NPA should not be doing.”
Matlala is also alleged to be linked to corruption with the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The MK Party in Gauteng said it will be marching to the Union Buildings on 18 July for action to be taken following the exposé by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
