JOHANNESBURG - The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Human Settlements said it will cost about R1.6 billion to build homes for flood-stricken families in parts of the province.

KZN has more than 4,000 people who have been displaced by floods since 2022.

Speaking during a media briefing on Sunday, the provincial Department of Human Settlements announced that pockets of land have been identified in eThekwini for relief to the destitute families.

Seven rezoned portions of land are ready for construction.

Department spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, said that in their efforts to house flood victims, they are working on the Montclair Lodge, which they recently purchased.

"So the MEC has described this development as a major milestone. We are going to be starting the renovations of the building so that we are able to accommodate the affected families.”
