CAPE TOWN - The Pedal Power Association has again raised concerns about the risk to cyclists on Cape Town’s roads as the organisation held a memorial ride for cyclists who passed away last week.
The association said it’s worried about the lack of respect for the rules of the road by some motorists, putting cyclists in danger.
A cyclist was killed on Chapman's Peak by a tour bus on Sunday, while veteran cyclist Dennis Harmer was attacked in the city centre after someone tried to rob him of his phone.
The CEO of the Pedal Power Association, Neil Robinson, said road users need to be tolerant of each other.
"If you look at the most deaths on our roads in South Africa, it's pedestrians by far. So, I think we don't obey the rules of the road - we speed, we drink and drive, and we drive recklessly. If you look at how people respect one another in other countries around the world, Europe especially, there's a complete and utter different respect and tolerance on the road."
