JOHANNESBURG - Patriotic Alliance (PA) member Liam Jacobs has been sworn in as a councillor in the Johannesburg City Council.

The 24-year-old replaces the party’s suspended deputy leader, Kenny Kunene, who resigned as a councillor and was recalled as Transport MMC last month.

Kunene’s political downfall came after he was found at the home of murder-accused businessman Katiso "KT" Molefe last month.

Molefe is currently behind bars for allegedly orchestrating the murder of Oupa Sefoka, commonly known as DJ Sumbody.

Jacobs recently resigned from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and left his seat in Parliament to join the PA, a move he announced on Facebook Live alongside PA leader Gayton McKenzie.

The party initially deployed Jacobs to the City of Tshwane and named him as its mayoral candidate for next year’s local government elections.

However, after Kunene’s latest scandal, Jacobs was reassigned to the City of Joburg Council as his replacement.

It remains unclear whether Jacobs will also take up the role of MMC for Transport, a position left vacant after Kunene was recalled by his party.

While Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero made changes to his mayoral committee on Thursday, he made no mention of the transport portfolio.
