The University of Fort Hare has placed its vice-chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu, on precautionary suspension following a forensic investigation into alleged improper executive appointments.
The decision was taken by the council at a meeting on Monday, with the suspension taking effect from Tuesday.
The university says the move is an interim measure pending disciplinary processes and does not constitute a guilty finding.
The suspension stems from findings that four senior management members, including Buhlungu, failed to follow governance procedures in the appointment of two executive directors.
Council says these appointments were made without the required approval, as set out in the university’s statute.
Following the investigation, the vice-chancellor was informed of the findings and allowed to respond before the decision was taken.
The university says it has since appointed deputy vice-chancellor for research, partnerships and innovation, Dr Nthabi Taole-Mjimba, as acting vice-chancellor to ensure continuity.
Council has moved to reassure staff and students that operations will continue as normal, while disciplinary processes run their course.
