JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela said they have managed to stabilise the situation at Maponya Mall following community outrage over the death of an e-hailing driver there last week.

The MEC has noted that calm has been restored to Pimville, where the community came out in protest of the brutal killing last Wednesday.

It is business as usual at Maponya Mall with the addition of more law enforcement on the ground.

Some residents still roam about the mall, questioning how the situation is on Monday, following the horrific events that took place in front of the shopping centre’s entrance.

Mthokozisi Mvelase was shot and killed while stationed in what is believed to be a pickup point there last week.

Gauteng MEC of Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela said that through their many engagements with stakeholders, they have managed to bring peace

“Just want to say to people of Soweto, people of Gauteng, that we now have things under control and we just met with the Soweto e-hailers organisation. It's different organisations, about 16 of them that were here with us in the morning, with the centre manager as well as the taxi association represented here.”

Tlabela added that they are working with law enforcement to ensure that people are safe.
