JOHANNESBURG - Proteas all-rounder Prenelan Subrayen will miss Friday’s second One-Day International (ODI) against Australia.

Subrayen was reported for a suspect bowling action in the first ODI on Tuesday, which was also his debut, and will now have to undergo an independent assessment within 14 days.

The player remains eligible for selection, but coach Shukri Conrad said it was in Subrayen’s best interest to sit the game out.

"He’s available to play. You’re allowed to play until you get tested. We just felt, together with Subs, on less noise and to get him out of the public eye, to make sure he’s okay and that he focuses on his testing. That’s why his name is not going to be on the team sheet tomorrow," Conrad said.

Subrayen made a good start to his debut, taking the wicket of opener Travis Head when the Australian side was cruising on 60/0 in the 8th over. That wicket, coupled with some exceptional bowling from Keshav Maharaj, who took 5/33, led to a collapse from the hosts and an eventual 98-run win for SA.

However, the match officials’ report raised some concerns about the legality of Subrayen’s action.

Conrad has indicated that 31-year-old Subrayen was doing well despite receiving the devastating news. His bowling technique has come under the microscope before when he was a teenager in 2012, when it was ruled to be illegal. He was cleared the following year before having to face the same scrutiny in 2014 and then again in 2015.

"He’s doing alright. He’s obviously gone through this process before, many years ago. It’s never easy and he’s waited this long to make his debut and did very well. We, obviously, rally around him and making sure he’s in the best spirits. Next week will reveal a lot and then we’ll take it from there," Conrad said.

Subrayen will miss Sunday’s third and final ODI, in all likelihood as well, before going for tests in Brisbane ahead of the squad’s departure for their next series in England in September.
