CAPE TOWN - The Uyinene Mrwetyana Foundation is calling for young boys and men to play a central role in shifting attitudes towards women in a bid to curb the alarming levels of gender-based violence (GBV) across the country.
Demonstrators marched to Parliament at the weekend to commemorate the anniversary of Mrwetyana’s brutal murder.
The 19-year-old University of Cape Town (UCT) student was raped and killed by a post office employee in 2019.
Co-founder of the Uyinene Mrwetyana Foundation and mother of Uyinene, Nomangwane Mrwetyana: "It's been six years, yes, but it still feels like yesterday. You know, it's like a rollercoaster. One day you think you have moved on, the next day, you're breaking down. So, we have come to a point as a family to accept that this is going to be our life."
SRC president at UCT, Thando Lukhele weighed in on what he believes will bring about real change in the scourge of GBV.
"Langa for Men creates a group of young boys and educates them about gender-based violence, educates them on why it's important for them not to find themselves engaging in what we call rape culture."
