Mobile operator MTN has the best voice network in South Africa, according to the 2025 Mobile Voice Network Quality Report from MyBroadband Insights.
The report is based on data collected through the most comprehensive mobile network testing project ever conducted in South Africa, says IT news website MyBroadband.
They travelled over 10,000 kilometres and tested five networks across the country - MTN, Vodacom, Rain, Telkom, and Cell C.
Vodacom took second spot behind MTN, followed by Rain and Telkom who essentially tied for third place.
Cell C lagged well behind the other operators, performing poorly in all the metrics.
MyBroadband editor Jan Vermeulen explains that the survey is carried out with an advanced rig that makes 'thousands and thousands' of phone calls and then tests quality.
"The one thing that we do besides measuring the time it takes for the call to connect and be set up, and measuring dropped calls... is play an audio file and then do measurements on the receiving side to see whether the quality of the audio on the receiving end is good or not."

MyBroadband Insights used the globally recognised European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) specification to rank the mobile operators’ voice network quality.
