The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition has submitted a draft proposal to allow student debt to be listed with credit bureaus.
This could mean students will come straight out of university and find themselves blacklisted.
The ANC Youth League has slammed this proposal, saying it will deepen generational inequality and goes against the government’s commitments to youth empowerment.
“We believe that education is a right and not a privilege.”

Khanyase adds that students who are unable to pay fees are already struggling financially, and labelling them as a credit risk before they enter the work force will affect their futures.
“You are saying that they should already be seen as people who cannot participate in those spaces because there are some careers that don't employ you when you are already blacklisted.”
- Zama Khanyase, National Spokesperson - ANCYL
However, the Department says this proposal aligns credit laws with reality.
