KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has provided context on the arrest of Crime Intelligence boss, Dumisani Khumalo, as he fights to have his bail conditions relaxed so he can return to work.
Khumalo and six others were arrested in July by members of the Independent Directorate Against Corruption on charges of fraud and corruption.
This relates to the appointment of Dineo Mokwele to a senior position within crime intelligence without having any previous policing experience.
Mkhwanazi is testifying on day 2 of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria.
Mkhwanazi has suggested that members of parliament, Fadiel Adams and Dianne Kohler, abused their powers and interfered in crime intelligence matters.

A move by Adams to register fraud and corruption in Cape Town and Soweto related to crime intelligence's vetting process and the employment of Mokwele within the unit resulted in the arrest of Khumalo.
Mkhwanazi said the arrest of Khumalo saw the work of the Political Killings Task Team, who were assisting Gauteng counterintelligence operations, come to a halt.
"What is much talked about in the media, that is not known, is the arrest of General Khumalo. So, we have this arrest, when this arrest happens, it literally means this project must stop, this investigation of this organised crime must literally stop immediately because the people are arrested."
Khumalo is currently fighting to allow his bail conditions to be relaxed so he can return to the Crime Intelligence offices.
