Residents in parts of Sandton and surrounding areas in the north of Johannesburg can expect electricity to be restored.

The areas were plunged into darkness after a fire broke out in the Cydna substation on Thursday.

City Power said it suspects that the incident was the result of vandalism and theft.

Utility’s spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, said they are hoping for the repair work to be completed by Sunday evening.

"City Power teams have been working hard to basically ensure that we restore power supply to parts of Sandton, including Melrose, Illovo, Houghton, and the surrounding areas, following a fire at our Cydne substation. The fire, preliminarily, we believe that was caused by attempted theft of cables at the Sydney substation, but the police and everyone else from the law enforcement have been informed and we are hoping that whoever the people who were attempting to steal the copper cables there can be found and be arrested," said Mangena.
