The acting Minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia, has condemned attacks against Ghanaian nationals and other foreigners, warning that xenophobic violence will not be tolerated.
This follows recent incidents of intimidation and looting, which authorities said undermine the rule of law and South Africa’s constitutional values.
Police have been instructed to act decisively with those involved in violence or incitement expected to face arrest.
The ministry said no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands, despite any grievances.
It is urging communities to remain calm and work with law enforcement to prevent further violence.
The police ministry’s spokesperson, Kamogelo Mogotsi, explained: “All those found to be participating in, inciting, or supporting such criminal conduct will be identified, apprehended, and brought before the courts.”
Authorities are also calling on community leaders and civil society to help promote dialogue and social cohesion.
