The Gauteng Department of Education is continuing to provide food through its learner nutrition programme, despite delays in payments to service providers.
Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said the backlog has been caused by a reduction in provincial funding.

He said more learners are making use of the programme because of affordability challenges linked to increasing socioeconomic issues.
He said the department is reviewing its policies.
"The Department has engaged directly with affected service providers and is committed to resolve accordingly."
