Nathi Mthethwa's untimely passing a moment of deep grief - Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his condolences to the ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa’s family.

Mthethwa died at a hotel in Paris on Tuesday.

At the time of his death, the 58-year-old was serving as ambassador for about 17 months.

French authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Nathi Mthethwa worked as a minister in different portfolios for 15 years.

Five of those were under President Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration as minister of sport, arts and culture.

As ambassador, Ramaphosa said that Mthethwa facilitated the deepening of relations between South Africa and France, producing benefits for people and businesses in both countries.

"The untimely passing of Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa is a moment of deep grief in which government and citizens stand beside the Mthethwa family," said Ramaphosa.

Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC) has described Mthethwa as both a dedicated freedom fighter and public servant.

"Comrade Mthethwa was not merely a public official; he was a committed cadre of the liberation struggle and a dedicated servant of the people in our democratic era. His life was one of both struggle and service."

United Democratic Movement (UDM) leader, Bantu Holomisa, said that both he and Mthethwa received military training from the Transkei Defence Force during apartheid.

Holomisa said that this formative period shaped Mthethwa’s disciplined approach to public service.

"The United Democratic Movement mourns the loss of a devoted public servant and a true patriot. Ambassador Mthethwa’s contributions to strengthening South Africa’s bilateral relations and advancing defence diplomacy will leave a lasting legacy," said Holomisa.

"I extend my prayers and deepest sympathies to his family, loved ones, and colleagues. South Africa has lost a remarkable diplomat and a servant of the people."
