The City of Johannesburg is working on including the taxi industry in the formal public transportation system in the metro.
The metro’s executive director of transport, Luthando Maboza, shared this with industry stakeholders at the Smart Mobility Summit on Wednesday.
The annual summit continues on Thursday and will see various urban mobility companies exhibiting innovative inventions aimed at improving transport on the continent.
Maboza said that bringing innovative change into the public transport sector can only be achieved by including the taxi industry in the discussions.
"Without the working and inclusion of the mini bus taxis in our strategy, then we're not going to achieve anything. So I think the bigger clarity is how we formally include mini bus taxis in our strategy and make sure that they are part of the formal mobility within the city."
